Gowri Shankar (1954-1995), nicknamed Auto Shankar after the autorickshaw he drove, was an Indian gangster who ran an illicit liquor and prostitution racket in Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai. He led a gang including his brother Mohan and associates Eldin and Shivaji. He claimed his crimes served politicians who had abused trafficked girls. He was hanged at Salem Central Prison on 27 April 1995.

Details
Gowri Shankar, known as Auto Shankar, operated an illicit liquor and prostitution business in the Thiruvanmiyur area of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Over roughly six months in 1988, multiple teenage girls vanished from the area, and Shankar's gang was implicated in their disappearances. He and associates including his brother Mohan, Eldin and Shivaji were tried for six murders of victims named Lalitha, Sudalaimuthu, Sampath, Mohan, Govindaraj and Ravi. He was sentenced to death and hanged at Salem Central Prison on 27 April 1995. The case is legally notable for a related Supreme Court free-speech ruling.
