Background: The Murdaugh Legal Dynasty

Richard Alexander "Alex" Murdaugh, born in 1968, belonged to one of the most powerful legal families in the South Carolina Lowcountry. For nearly a century, three generations of Murdaughs served as the elected solicitor (chief prosecutor) for the state's 14th Judicial Circuit, covering Hampton, Colleton, and surrounding counties. Alex worked as a personal-injury attorney at the family-founded firm in Hampton, then known as Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth & Detrick (PMPED). The family's wealth, political connections, and influence over local courts gave them outsized power in the region, a backdrop that later shaped public scrutiny of the case.

The Murders of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh

On the night of June 7, 2021, Alex Murdaugh's wife, Margaret "Maggie" Murdaugh, 52, and their younger son, Paul Murdaugh, 22, were fatally shot at the family's hunting property, known as Moselle, near Islandton in Colleton County. Maggie was killed with a rifle and Paul with a shotgun, both shot multiple times near the property's dog kennels. Alex Murdaugh placed the 911 call reporting that he had found their bodies after returning from visiting his ailing mother. He told investigators he had no involvement in the killings.

At the time of his death, Paul Murdaugh was facing criminal charges in connection with a 2019 boat crash that killed 19-year-old Mallory Beach. That case had drawn significant attention to the family and generated civil litigation against Alex. Investigators initially released few details, and the murders remained without a named suspect for more than a year.

Financial Crimes and Unraveling

In the months after the murders, Alex Murdaugh's life rapidly came apart. In September 2021, he was shot in the head in a roadside incident; he later admitted he had arranged for a former client, Curtis Edward Smith, to shoot him in a failed scheme intended to provide a $10 million life-insurance payout for his surviving son, Buster. The plot exposed deeper problems.

Investigations revealed that Murdaugh had allegedly stolen millions of dollars from clients, his law firm, and others over many years. Prosecutors said he misappropriated settlement funds, including money owed to the family of the Murdaughs' late housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, who died in a 2018 fall at the family home. Murdaugh was eventually indicted on roughly 100 charges encompassing financial crimes such as breach of trust, money laundering, and obtaining property under false pretenses, with alleged thefts totaling millions of dollars.

The Murder Trial

Murdaugh was indicted for the murders of Maggie and Paul in July 2022. His trial began in late January 2023 in the Colleton County courthouse in Walterboro, presided over by Judge Clifton Newman and prosecuted by the South Carolina Attorney General's Office, led at trial by prosecutor Creighton Waters. The case drew national and international media attention.

A central piece of evidence was a cellphone video recorded by Paul at the kennels minutes before the killings. Alex Murdaugh's voice was identified on the video, contradicting his repeated claims that he had not been at the kennels that evening. Prosecutors argued that mounting financial pressures and the threat of exposure gave Murdaugh a motive to kill his family to gain sympathy and buy time. Murdaugh testified in his own defense, admitting he had lied to investigators about his whereabouts but denying that he killed his wife and son. He attributed his earlier deception to paranoia and an opioid addiction.

Verdict, Sentencing, and Aftermath

On March 2, 2023, after deliberating for less than three hours, the jury found Alex Murdaugh guilty on two counts of murder and two related weapons charges. The following day, Judge Newman sentenced him to two consecutive life terms in prison without the possibility of parole. Murdaugh's attorneys announced plans to appeal, including challenges related to allegations that the Colleton County clerk of court, Becky Hill, had improperly influenced jurors; courts later declined to grant a new trial on those grounds, though that litigation drew additional scrutiny.

Separately, Murdaugh faced his financial-crime cases. In November 2023 he pleaded guilty to numerous state financial charges, and he also pleaded guilty to federal financial crimes.
