Thailand's place in the true-crime record is shaped here by one figure I keep returning to: Charles Sobhraj, the drifter known as the Serpent and the Bikini Killer. Working out of 1970s Bangkok, he charmed Western backpackers along the Southeast Asia trail, drugged them, and killed to take their money and passports.
It is a single case, so I make no claim about a wider pattern. What it documents is a particular kind of predator who used the freedom of the overland travel routes against the people drawn to them.
