New Zealand sits at the quieter edge of the true-crime record, a country far more associated with safety than with violence. The cases I have mapped here reflect that. Rather than a long catalogue, this page marks the moments that genuinely shook the nation.
The entry that anchors it is the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings, the attack on two mosques during Friday prayers that became the deadliest mass shooting in the country's history. I have documented it because of how deeply it reshaped New Zealand's sense of itself, not to suggest the country is a violent place.
I research each case by hand and add to this map as the record warrants. For now, New Zealand's place in that record is small, and I think it is more honest to say so than to pad it out.
