The Netherlands is not a country I associate with a deep true-crime catalogue, and the cases mapped here reflect that. What I have documented so far centers on a single killing that reached far beyond Amsterdam.
In 2004, the filmmaker and columnist Theo van Gogh was shot and stabbed to death on an Amsterdam street by Mohammed Bouyeri, who was angered by the short film Submission. The murder became a defining moment in Dutch public life and in debates over free expression.
I research every case on this map by hand, so this page stays narrow on purpose. It marks the Netherlands' place in the wider record through the van Gogh case rather than implying any broader pattern.
