Iran's presence in the true-crime record is narrow but unforgettable. The case I've mapped here centers on Saeed Hanaei, the man the press called the Spider Killer, who strangled sixteen women in the holy city of Mashhad and framed the murders as a personal campaign against vice before his arrest in 2001.
I research every entry on this map by hand, so I'd rather be exact than sweeping. One documented case does not make a pattern, and it says little about the country as a whole. What it does offer is a closely studied account of how one man rationalized serial murder, and the troubling public response that followed his trial.
