True Crime Cases in Ecuador

Ecuador appears in the true-crime record through a small number of cases, but each one casts a long shadow. The cases I have mapped here center on Quito, and they span very different kinds of violence: one of the most prolific serial killers ever recorded, and a political assassination that unsettled an election.

The earliest is Pedro Lopez, the so-called Monster of the Andes, who confessed to killing girls across Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador before his release in 1998 and his disappearance from the record. Decades later, the 2023 killing of presidential candidate and journalist Fernando Villavicencio, shot leaving a campaign rally, marked a very different chapter.

I research each case here by hand and keep to what is documented. This is a short list rather than a broad pattern, so the page sticks to the specifics of these cases and their place in the wider history of recorded crime.
